The opposition coalition has condemned member of Ihavandhoo constituency of People's Parliament Mohamed Shifau’s words to bodily harm their presidential candidate, former president Yameen Abdul Gayyoom and called out for an investigation of his actions.

A press statement released by the opposition stated they strongly condemn Shifau's message calling  out to be cruel and harm president Yameen in the Parliament's WhatsApp group yesterday.

It also stated that Shifau’s message calling out to cut off President Yameen's hand was an action that supports terrorism, and thus they called for the Maldives Police Service to investigate this matter as a serious issue without delay.

They highlighted that while MDP’s member Shifau is this government's most vocal defender, members of the Parliament in addition to some cabinet ministers, who support President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his government has also been attempting to harm him outside the system.

They stated that, for instance, on May 1st the current government's Home Minister Imran Abdullah had gotten personal and tweeted that they will be harmful to president Yameen.

The opposition also highlighted that former President Yameen is the presidential candidate of the coalition who will be representing them in this year’s upcoming presidential election.

However, he has been sentenced with a ‘haram’ verdict with the government’s influence and it has been made clear with the vocabulary of the people in high government positions and Parliament members who support this government, that more harm will come to him in the future, to the point of his life being in danger, stated the opposition.

Hence, they called out to the relevant authorities to grant him home confinement immediately to ensure his safety and security.
