Incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has stated that MDP’s succession for the first time in the seat of Guraidhoo constituency in the by-election is a huge progress for the party.

He stated this in a tweet whilst congratulating MDP's candidate Shaaz Ibrahim for his victory in the by-election held yesterday.

President Solih stated that this election has revealed that the citizens of this constituency is with the government.

He also highlighted MDP’s succession of this constituency’s seat for the first time as a huge progress for the party.

According to the results of the by-election, Shaaz won 1340 votes, while the closest opponent, Hussain Riza, representing Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), had won 1226 votes. Maldives National Party (MNP)'s candidate only won 128 votes.

Due to this the opposition has been suspecting the government of influencing the election to win the seat for MDP.

They suspected that the increase in voting time was due to the results at that time ensuring a loss for MDP. The temporary leader of the opposition’s coalition, the leader of PNC, Abdul Raheem Abdulla stated that the Election’s Commission President Fuad Thaufeeq admitted that the by- election's voting time was increased by the government’s influence.
