Former economic minister and current member of the Maavah constituency Mohamed Saeed has stated that the Indian company Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., who is in charge of the Thilamale' bridge and the Addu City road development, will put the Maldivian state into debt and flee.

Saeed made this statement while speaking at the People's Majilis sitting today.

He also demanded that the payments meant to be made to the Indian company by Ministry of Finance are halted, and that the agreement made regarding the Thilamale' bridge is terminated as soon as possible.

According to Saeed, the company will escape after putting the state in debt within the next four months - he has warned the concerned government authorities to be alert.

I am calling for Ministry of Finance to cancel the payments which are meant to be given to Afcons, and cancel the contract for the bridge right here, right now.

While member Saeed has said this, Indian billionaire Shapoor Mistry has decided to sell Afcons Insfrastructure Ltd. due to financial issues being faced by his group, Shapoorji Pallonji (SP).

According to Indian news sources, SP, one of the biggest companies of India, has decided to sell assets worth over 2 billion dollars.

India's Afcons Infrastructure Ltd. and Gopalpur Port are some of these assets that are being sold.

Despite a majority of significant Maldivian developmental projects being given to Afcons Infrastructure Ltd., the Maldivian government is yet to speak up regarding the sale of the company.
