The government has announced a nationwide five-year campaign aimed at reducing tobacco consumption and promoting healthier lifestyles across the Maldives.

The initiative was officially unveiled during a press conference held at the President’s Office to mark World No Tobacco Day.

The initiative was announced during a joint briefing involving four government ministries.

Speaking at the event, Minister of Health, Family and Welfare Geela Ali highlighted the measures already introduced to strengthen tobacco control efforts in the country.

These include the implementation of a tobacco-free generation policy and a nationwide ban on vaping products.

The minister noted that the new campaign forms part of broader efforts to further reduce smoking rates and improve public health outcomes over the long term.

The five-year initiative will focus on increasing public awareness, expanding support programs, and encouraging community participation in tobacco control efforts.

Authorities plan to carry out awareness campaigns through schools, youth programs, and sports-related activities while also strengthening collaboration with non-governmental organizations.

The government also intends to enhance enforcement of existing tobacco control laws and regulations as part of the campaign.

Officials said the initiative recognizes that reducing tobacco use requires sustained action over an extended period and will depend on cooperation among government institutions, civil society organizations, and the wider public.

The campaign is expected to serve as a key component of the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to reduce tobacco consumption and improve national health outcomes in the years ahead.
