Ahmed Nazim has resigned from his position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament shortly before lawmakers were set to consider a motion seeking his removal from office.

The resignation was announced during Sunday's parliamentary sitting, bringing an end to Nazim’s tenure in the chamber’s second-highest leadership role.

Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla informed members that an additional sitting will be held tomorrow to determine the next steps, including the election of a new deputy speaker.

A resolution calling for Nazim’s dismissal was submitted to Parliament on 14 May.

The Parliamentary Secretariat previously stated that the matter was being processed in accordance with constitutional provisions and parliamentary procedures.

In a statement issued following his resignation, Nazim criticized the move to remove him from office and rejected the allegations cited as grounds for the motion.

While stepping down from the deputy speaker position, he maintained that the claims against him were unfounded and expressed disagreement with the process that led to the proposed vote.

Parliament is now expected to begin the process of selecting a replacement deputy speaker during the upcoming sitting.
