President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim pledged practical support for Maldivian students and families living in Malaysia during his recent state visit to the Maldives.

Speaking on PSM’s Nation Chat program, President Dr. Muizzu said approximately 2,700 Maldivian students are currently studying at Malaysian institutions, while about 6,000 Maldivians live in the country with their families.

According to the President, Prime Minister Anwar assured that administrative procedures would be made easier for Maldivian students, including those planning to study in Malaysia.

The discussions also included expanding internship opportunities, particularly for students in medical and technical fields.

The proposed measures are intended to address academic and everyday difficulties faced by Maldivian students and residents in Malaysia.

The two leaders also discussed steps to accelerate implementation of a USD 100 million currency-swap arrangement.

They considered beginning negotiations on a Preferential Trade Agreement, which could provide special concessions for trade between the two countries, as well as exploring opportunities for joint investment.

President Dr. Muizzu described Malaysia as an important partner for the Maldives.

He said the talks also covered cooperation on climate change, operational matters affecting the Maldivian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, and the establishment of a joint committee to further strengthen bilateral relations.

Prime Minister Anwar’s visit was made at the invitation of President Dr. Muizzu and included discussions on expanding cooperation across education, trade, investment, climate action, and people-to-people ties.
