President Dr. Muizzu calls for sustainable and technology-driven tourism
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to building a resilient and sustainable tourism industry that is prepared for the future through digital innovation and skills development.
In a message marking World Tourism Day 2026 on Sunday, President Dr. Muizzu said the country must embrace new technology while protecting the natural environment, cultural identity and hospitality that distinguish the Maldives as a global tourism destination.
World Tourism Day 2026 is being observed under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”
President Dr. Muizzu expressed appreciation to everyone working in the tourism industry, highlighting their contribution to the Maldives’ development and its position as one of the world’s leading holiday destinations.
He noted that tourism has played an important role in creating economic opportunities across the islands and strengthening connections between Maldivian communities and the millions of visitors who have traveled to the country.
The president also highlighted the growing influence of digital technology and artificial intelligence on the international tourism industry.
New technologies are changing how travelers discover destinations, organize trips and experience tourism services.
According to President Dr. Muizzu, these developments can create new ways for destinations to engage with visitors, improve services and remain competitive in the global market.
He stressed the need for continued investment in digital technology, skills and professional capabilities so the Maldives can adapt to an increasingly technology-driven tourism industry.
At the same time, President Dr. Muizzu emphasized the importance of preserving the personal service and authenticity that are central to the Maldivian tourism experience.
He said technology should support the human element of hospitality rather than replace it.
President Dr. Muizzu also highlighted the importance of innovation, cooperation and investment in people as the Maldives seeks to maintain its position in an increasingly competitive global tourism industry.
The message comes as destinations worldwide explore the use of artificial intelligence and other digital technologies to improve tourism services while balancing technological development with sustainability and local identity.
