A total of MVR 255,000 raised to support relief efforts following the recent disaster in Nepal has been handed over to the Maldivian Red Crescent (MRC).

The funds were presented by Maldives Medical Association (MMA) at a handover ceremony held today at the MRC headquarters.

The donations were collected through the Nepal Aid Initiative, with contributions from healthcare associations, doctors and members of the public.

The Maldives Anesthesiologists Association, the Radiology Society of Maldives and the Maldives Association of Surgeons were among the organisations involved in the fundraising initiative.

The MRC will facilitate the delivery of the funds as part of ongoing relief efforts for communities affected by the disaster in Nepal.

The disaster occurred on August 26, when a collapse of rock and glacier ice near Langtang Lirung triggered a massive avalanche and debris flow, resulting in catastrophic flooding downstream.

The event sent large amounts of ice, rock and sediment into the river system, causing flash floods and landslides that devastated communities in the region and claimed numerous lives
