The People's National Congress (PNC) has unanimously resolved to award President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu the party’s presidential ticket for the 2028 election without holding a primary.

The resolution was passed during the PNC Congress held today, presided over by PNC Chairperson and Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla.

Proposed by general member Abdulla Ibrahim, the resolution received unanimous support from the 1,119 members present at the session.

In seeking approval of the resolution, the Congress highlighted several measures and policies undertaken by the Muizzu administration since assuming office.

According to the resolution, the government has overseen the removal of foreign military personnel from the Maldives,  described as safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty.

It also cited the strengthening of the Maldives’ maritime surveillance capabilities.

The resolution further commended the administration’s efforts to manage national debt without placing an additional burden on citizens, diversify the economy and introduce initiatives including “Digital Maldives 2.0”.

It also highlighted the commencement of major housing developments, including the Rasmalé project, as well as President Muizzu’s advocacy internationally for the rights of the Palestinian people.

The resolution cited Article 88 of the PNC Charter, which states that a party member serving as President of the Republic is entitled to the party’s presidential ticket for a second term without a primary election.

Describing President Muizzu’s re-election as a “national duty,” the resolution called on him to contest for a second term in the 2028 presidential election.

The resolution stated that the decision represents a collective request from PNC members, made through the party’s Senate, for President Muizzu to seek a second term.
