Afcons workers to the Police station due to being threatened for protesting
The workers who are constructing Addu City roads have gone to the City's Police station stating that they were being starved and threatened by the company Afcons.
In a video these workers who were at the Police station shared their concerns about being warned and threatened of physical assault due them protesting and going on strike against the company.
According to the workers they had to work no matter how sick or injured they were and are threatened of being starved otherwise.
On top of the condition where they weren’t even being fed, they also were not receiving their salaries. Due to this they started protesting and going on strike to which the Addu management responded by threatening to send the workers back to their country and of physically assaulting and beating them up.
“Due to being hit one of them was bleeding near the eye. My brother had a leg injury so I asked for treatment. But they didn’t do that either. They said that there was no way to treat it here. So, I said to send me and my brother to India. So that we can be treated there. But saying that we can’t get visa and such they didn’t do that either. What are we to do here if things get serious and a person dies due to such neglect?” Afcons worker spoke.
4 days have passed since Afcons workers began their strike to protest. Due to these issues 2 councilors of Addu City met with the workers to clear up their concerns. However, the issue hasn’t been solved.
In addition to this the planning minister Mohamed Aslam is currently in the city to check the progress of the construction of the road.
