India's High Commissioner to the Maldives, G. Balasubramanian, has reaffirmed that infrastructure development and human resource empowerment remain the foundation of the long-standing partnership between India and the Maldives.

In an exclusive interview with PSM, the High Commissioner said development cooperation between the two countries has continued to expand, with projects focused on improving public infrastructure while strengthening skills and opportunities for Maldivians.

As the Maldives and India commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, he emphasized that development remains a central pillar of bilateral cooperation.

He noted that India continues to invest heavily in capacity building through training programs for Maldivian professionals across a range of sectors.

According to the High Commissioner, more than 1,600 Maldivians receive professional training in India each year under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, further enhancing educational and technical collaboration between the two countries.

He also highlighted several major infrastructure projects supported by India, including the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP), the redevelopment of Hanimaadhoo and Gan International Airports, and road and drainage development projects in Addu City.

He added that these initiatives are complemented by numerous High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) aimed at improving services and facilities across the islands.

Beyond large-scale infrastructure, India has continued to support community-focused development through the HICDP framework.

The High Commissioner said 56 projects have been launched under the initiative across three phases, with 24 already completed and inaugurated.

The total investment in these projects stands at approximately MVR 355 million.

India and the Maldives continue to maintain close bilateral relations across multiple sectors, including infrastructure, education, capacity building, trade, and community development.
