New Maldives-India agreement to strengthen fitness centers nationwide

Maldives and India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) under the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP) framework to provide fitness and recreation equipment for centers across 42 islands.

The agreement was signed during a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Minister Iruthisham Adam signed on behalf of the Maldivian government, while Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian signed on behalf of the Government of India.

Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness Abdulla Rafiu also signed the agreement as the implementing agency.

The initiative aims to improve access to modern recreational facilities, promote healthier lifestyles, and strengthen community well-being throughout the country.

This project will pave the way for a healthier and more active lifestyle, broadening the path to quality health and well-being. Furthermore, it marks a step forward in empowering women and fostering equality and social inclusion, 

the Minister Iruthisham said

The government said the project is expected to encourage greater participation in sports and physical activity while creating more inclusive spaces for women, young people, and families in island communities.

Fitness and recreation centers will serve as essential facilities that facilitate a healthy lifestyle, foster social cohesion, and contribute to the overall well-being of the community. This project will broaden the scope for people of all ages, particularly women and youth, to participate in sports and leisure activities, thereby enhancing the health and resilience of the citizens,

Speaking at the ceremony, Indian High Commissioner G. Balasubramanian highlighted the longstanding partnership between the Maldives and India, noting that the agreement reflects the close cooperation between the two countries.

He also emphasized that the project will help provide accessible sports and recreational facilities for residents across the atolls, further supporting community development and healthy living.
