More than 2,100 PayPal wallets have been successfully activated in the Maldives, with additional services from the global payment platform expected to be introduced in the coming months, according to Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed.

Speaking at a press conference held at the President's Office, Saeed said PayPal is already operational in the Maldives and dismissed claims that the platform has yet to launch in the country.

He argued that such assertions are being made by political opponents despite the service already being available.

I believe certain political figures who disagree with us are attempting to assert that we have failed to bring PayPal to the Maldives, even though the service has already been established,

 the Minister remarked

Providing an update on the platform's adoption, Saeed said thousands of businesses have already been linked to PayPal, while more than 2,100 users have activated their digital wallets.

PayPal is currently active in the Maldives. There are 3,280 startups or businesses linked to the service, and 2,159 wallets have already been activated. This clearly demonstrates that the system is functional,

Minister Saeed explained

The minister noted that PayPal's entry into the Maldivian market was once considered unlikely due to the country's relatively small population.

However, he said the government completed all the necessary procedures to facilitate the service through direct engagement with PayPal.

According to Saeed, following negotiations with the government, PayPal independently selected Ooredoo Maldives as its local service provider.

The platform was subsequently launched through collaboration between the government, PayPal, and Ooredoo.

He added that the current rollout represents only the beginning of PayPal's services in the Maldives, with additional capabilities expected to become available over time.

Further options available within the PayPal ecosystem will continue to be rolled out,

Minister Saeed stated

The government has described the introduction of PayPal as a significant step toward strengthening the country's digital economy and expanding access to international online payment services for individuals and businesses.
