Two arrested after police seize over 1kg of drugs

Two individuals have been arrested in Malé after police seized more than one kilogram of illicit narcotics during a targeted operation investigating suspected drug trafficking activities.

The suspects were identified as Mohamed Umair, 58, of G. Moonlightview in Malé, and Maasha Ibrahim, 38, of Gulalaage in L. Dhanbidhoo.

According to the Maldives Police Service, the arrests were made during a court-authorized operation carried out on the 23rd of this month by officers from the Drug Enforcement Department and Counter-Narcotics Intelligence.

During the operation, police searched an apartment in Malé and recovered more than one kilogram of suspected narcotics.

Authorities also discovered a substantial amount of cash at the location.

The two suspects are being investigated for alleged possession, use, and trafficking of prohibited drugs.

Following their arrest, both individuals were presented before the court for remand hearings. The court ordered that they remain in custody for 15 days while investigations continue.

Police said further inquiries are underway as authorities work to determine the full scope of the case and any potential links to wider drug trafficking activities.
