The Parliament’s Government Oversight Committee has endorsed the appointment of Hassan Zareer as Minister of Finance and Public Enterprises, moving his nomination one step closer to final approval.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu appointed Zareer to the position on June 8.

Under the Constitution, Cabinet appointments must receive parliamentary approval before ministers can officially exercise the powers of their office.

Following the nomination, the appointment was referred to the Government Oversight Committee for review.

After evaluating Zareer’s qualifications and experience, committee members unanimously voted in favor of recommending his appointment.

Zareer brings extensive experience in taxation and public finance.

He previously served as both Deputy Commissioner General and Commissioner General of the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA).

He also holds a Bachelor of Accounting degree and a Master of Science in Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).

During the same meeting, the committee also approved changes introduced by President Dr. Muizzu to the names and responsibilities of several government ministries.

The proposed amendments received unanimous support from committee members in attendance.

Both decisions will now be forwarded to the full Parliament for consideration.
