11 arrested; 4 hospitalized in oppositions protest

Eleven people have been arrested and four others hospitalized in a protest by the opposition calling for the release of presidential candidate president Yameen Abdul Gayyoom.

To interject the oppositions protest, Maldives Police Service had barricaded the area around where People’s Parliament was being held today.

However, with a significant amount of people the opposition members started protesting whilst waiting in the barricaded area.

To disband them the Police employed excessive force resulting in several people being injured including two journalists. They also arrested 11 people including the city council presidents of Huraa and Nolhivaranafaru.

The oppositions spokesperson Heena Waleed stated that 4 people were currently being treated in the hospital.
