Record turnout as MNU Marathon 2026 concludes in Hulhumalé

The Maldives National University (MNU) has successfully concluded its MNU Marathon 2026, recording its highest participation to date with more than 1,400 runners an increase of 400 participants compared to last year.

The race began at 2:00 a.m. from Hulhumalé Central Park, starting with the flagship 42-kilometre full marathon.

The half marathon (21 km) followed, along with the 10 km and 5 km races. A “Kids Dash” was also held at 7:00 a.m., offering younger participants an opportunity to take part in the event.

In a new addition this year, MNU introduced an Over-65 category for both men and women, encouraging greater participation among senior citizens.

According to MNU, all runners who completed their respective race distances received finisher’s medals in recognition of their accomplishment.

A separate ceremony will be held to award cash prizes to podium finishers across all categories.

The university stated that the marathon is organised to promote healthy lifestyles, strengthen community engagement, and foster the “MNU Spirit” among students, staff, alumni and members of the public.

Under the prize structure, winners of the 42 km full marathon in both men’s and women’s categories will receive MVR 10,000 for first place, MVR 7,000 for second place and MVR 5,000 for third place, with Over-65 winners also receiving MVR 10,000.

In the 21 km half marathon, first place winners will be awarded MVR 7,000, second place MVR 5,000 and third place MVR 3,000, while Over-65 winners will receive MVR 7,000.

For the 10 km race, prizes stand at MVR 5,000 for first place, MVR 3,000 for second place and MVR 2,000 for third place, with Over-65 winners receiving MVR 5,000.

In the 5 km category, winners will receive MVR 3,000 for first place, MVR 2,000 for second place and MVR 1,000 for third place, while Over-65 winners will be awarded MVR 3,000.
