Presidential Election to be held on September 9: Election Commission

Election Commission on Sunday announced that the 2023 Presidential Election would be held on September 9.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the election commission on Sunday Morning.  

Speaking at the Press Conference, Election Commission President Fuad Thaufeeq also explained that if a second round of voting was required after September 9 it would be held on September 30. 

The commission stated that they would publish the voter's list on May 5th and stated that over 280,000 Maldivian citizens are eligible to cast vote this year. The commission also stated that they would allow citizens to file a complaint on the voters' registry before June 2 with Re-registration being from July 16 to August 5.

The commission further highlighted these key dates:

* Candidates filing their nominations from July 23 to August 3

* Arranging of names and numbers of the candidates o on August 9

* Campaigning Period from August 10 to September 8

This year's election is set to have 145 ballot boxes across Male' City with 47 located in hulhumale' and 10 located in Vilimale'. A total of 327 ballot boxes would be allocated in the atolls while 12 ballot boxes would be set in other countries with sizable Maldivian populations. 

Multiple parties and Independent candidates have already announced their Presidential Candidates and intention to contest in the election. 

List candidates that have already been announced by their respective parties and independently: 

*PPM Presidential Candidate Former and Opposition party leader President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom 

*MNP President and Dhangethi MP Retired Colonel Ahmed Nazim 

*Former 2nd Vice President of LGA and Independent Candidate Shujau 

*Former Home Minister and Independent Candidate Umar Naseer 

*MDA President and Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam Mohamed 

The ruling MDP is set to hold its presidential primary with the incumbent President Solih and the Speaker of Parliament Nasheed battling it out to win the party's ticket. 

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Yameen has also been sentenced to jail for 11 years. 

This year's election seems to be an uncertain one with multiple candidates battling out to get the top job.
