Government opens path for Maldivian products to enter Alibaba marketplace

The government has launched efforts to enable Maldivian businesses to sell local products on Alibaba, the world’s largest e-commerce platform.

In a post on X, Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed announced that a one-day online workshop will be held on September 16 for e-commerce and online businesses in the Maldives.

Experts from Alibaba.com will take part in the workshop, which is designed to guide Maldivian entrepreneurs through creating seller accounts on the platform.

Minister Saeed said the initiative will allow local businesses to register, promote, and sell their products without barriers.

He wrote

adding that it forms part of ongoing discussions with Alibaba.com, supported by the Chinese government under the China-Maldives Free Trade Agreement.

He noted that this fulfills a key policy pledge to provide Maldivians with access to foreign e-commerce platforms and expand trade opportunities for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

According to the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, online business is now one of the fastest-growing sectors in the Maldives, with more than 400 registered online sellers already active in the market.
