Ismail Naveen, who had been serving as the acting Commissioner of Police for the past month, has now officially taken over the role following a formal appointment earlier today.

The position became vacant on 26 April after former Commissioner Ali Shujau stepped down.
In accordance with the Police Act, a permanent appointment was required within 45 days of the vacancy, marking today as the final deadline.

Naveen, alongside Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry and Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shameem, had all submitted nominations for the post.
After assessing the candidates, the Police Board found each to be qualified and forwarded their names to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. Acting on the recommendation of the Home Minister, the President selected Naveen for the role.

With several years of experience in the police force and a background of advanced professional training, Naveen brings a seasoned perspective to the top post.

His official letter of appointment was issued earlier in the day.
