Indian media has reported a strong possibility that Prime Minister Narendra Modi may visit the Maldives during the upcoming Independence Day holiday in July.

According to The Times of India, Maldivian President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu extended a formal invitation to Prime Minister Modi through Foreign Minister Abdulla Khaleel.

The invitation was delivered during Minister Khaleel’s official visit to India last week, where he attended the second meeting of the Maldives-India High-Level Core Group.

The report states that the Indian government is positively considering the proposal.

The visit, if confirmed, would mark Prime Minister Modi’s first trip to the Maldives since President Dr. Muizzu assumed office in November 2023.

President Dr. Muizzu had previously visited India to attend Modi’s swearing-in ceremony for a third term in June last year, followed by another official visit in October.

As both nations prepare to commemorate 60 years of diplomatic ties in 2025, the potential visit highlights the mutual intention to deepen cooperation and strategic relations within the Indian Ocean region.
