Police launch probe Into threats against Minister Khaleel by Sri Lankan national
The Maldives Police Service has launched an investigation into death threats made against Foreign Minister Dr. Abdulla Khaleel by a Sri Lankan national while he is on an official visit to Colombo.
The threats, posted on social media platform X, were made by Nadheesh Perera, a Sri Lankan national who was previously deported from the Maldives.
In a series of posts, Perera suggested that Minister Khaleel could die in a staged car accident in Colombo due to carbon monoxide inhalation or be targeted by a disguised lawyer in a courthouse.
He also warned that danger could come in the form of a hotel staff member.

Perera, who has tagged both Minister Khaleel and Maldives' Controller General of Immigration, Shamman Waheed, in his posts, claims he was unjustly deported and is being prevented from seeing his Maldivian child.
He alleges that Waheed, whom he accuses of having personal ties to his ex-wife, used his authority to block his entry into the Maldives.
Perera further accused Maldivian authorities of corruption, including the alleged sale of passports to international criminals.
According to reports, Perera was deported on May 4, 2024 under Chapter 20 of the Maldives Immigration Act, which governs deportation and entry restrictions for legal violations.
Maldives immigration officials had also informed the Sri Lankan High Commission of a restriction order to protect Perera’s ex-wife, though it was not officially issued to immigration authorities.
Earlier in 2024, his is lawyer Mariyam Muna, Managing Partner at M.M Chambers, commented on the legal difficulties Perera faces, stating that Maldivian lawyers cannot assist him until he obtains an official immigration stamp.
A police spokesperson confirmed that the threats against Minister Khaleel are being investigated in coordination with relevant authorities, though no arrests have been made.
Officials have begun questioning individuals linked to the case.
Minister Khaleel is currently in Sri Lanka on a three-day visit at the invitation of Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.
