Maldives has seen a significant increase in the number of Italian tourists with the start of the New Year, according to the Ministry of Tourism.

Italy ranked as the second largest source market for Maldivian tourism during the first 15 days of 2025, with 10,662 Italian tourists visiting the country, a rise of 11.8% compared to the same period last year.

In 2024, a total of 144,214 Italian tourists visited the Maldives, marking a 7% growth over 2023.

This resurgence follows a prolonged decline in Italian tourist arrivals, with the market showing steady improvement since last year.

The Ministry of Tourism attributes this growth to strengthened relations with Italy.

Late last year, Maldivian Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal held discussions with Italian Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè to explore ways to attract more Italian visitors.

Italy has historically been a vital market for Maldivian tourism.

Notably, the first tourist to visit the Maldives when tourism was introduced in 1972 was an Italian citizen.
