National Council passes Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction Strategy 2024-2030
The National Disaster Management Council, chaired by President Dr. Muizzu, has approved the Maldives Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Strategy for 2024-2030.
The decision was made during a meeting held at the President’s Office on Tuesday morning.
According to the President’s Office, the newly adopted strategy prioritizes the protection of Maldives’ environment and the safeguarding of citizens’ properties and assets against natural and other disasters.
It also emphasizes proactive disaster preparedness and fostering a resilient society aligned with sustainable development goals.
The strategy's implementation aims to minimize disaster-related damages, enhance disaster management capabilities, and strengthen human resources in the sector.
It further provides Maldives with an opportunity to amplify its advocacy for addressing the unique challenges faced by low-lying nations due to climate change.
The development of the DRR Strategy aligns with the fifth goal of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (2015-2030).
This global framework, adopted during the 2015 World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction in Sendai, Japan, calls for measures to address disaster risks stemming from hazards, vulnerabilities, and exposure.
Its overarching aim is to prevent new risks, reduce existing ones, and enhance societal resilience.
The Maldives is among the few nations to introduce such a forward-thinking strategy that integrates disaster risk reduction with climate change adaptation efforts.
