The two pain relief medications banned

The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has flagged two pain-relief medications for containing harmful industrial substances, diethylene glycol (DEG) and ethylene glycol (EG).

These toxic compounds, commonly used as industrial solvents and antifreeze agents, can be fatal if consumed.

The medications under scrutiny are:

1. Mefnac Suspension 50mg/5ml (Mefenamic Acid)

Manufacturer: Efroze Chemical Industries (Pvt.) Ltd, Pakistan

2. Axcel Mefenamic Acid Suspension 125mg/5ml (Mefenamic Acid)

Manufacturer: Kotra Pharma (M) Sdn. Bhd., Malaysia

The MFDA stated that initial tests revealed the presence of these substances during routine screening of medications available in the Maldives.

Samples have been sent abroad for confirmatory testing.

As a precautionary measure, the import, distribution, and sale of these two medications have been immediately banned.

Pharmacies are instructed to separate existing stocks of these products from other medicines.

The authority has urged the public and pharmacies to exercise caution and advised contacting the MFDA hotline at 7200321 for further clarification.
