The Indian Ministry of External Affairs has announced the appointment of G. Balasubramanian as the next High Commissioner of India to the Maldives.

Balasubramanian will succeed Munu Mahawar, who assumed the role in 2021 during the administration of former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Currently serving as India's Ambassador to Nigeria, Balasubramanian brings extensive experience from a diplomatic career that began in 1988.

His tenure in the Indian Foreign Service has included pivotal roles in major diplomatic hubs such as Moscow, Washington, D.C., and Bangkok.

Notably, he has served as Deputy Chief of Mission and as India’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP).

The External Affairs Ministry, in its brief statement issued on Monday, noted that Balasubramanian is expected to assume his responsibilities in Malé soon.
