Maldives would never do anything that undermines the security of India: President Dr. Muizzu
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reassured India that the Maldives' foreign engagements will not compromise the security or stability of its northern neighbor.
In an interview with the ‘Times of India’ during his state visit, President Dr. Muizzu emphasized that the Maldives values its long-standing friendship with India and respects its security interests.
Addressing concerns raised about the Maldives’ relations with China, President firmly stated,
The Maldives would never do anything that undermines the security of India. India is a valued partner and friend of the Maldives, and our relationship is built on mutual respect and shared interests. While we enhance our cooperation with other countries, we remain committed to ensuring that our actions do not compromise the security and stability of our region.
He said
His visit comes amid renewed attention on the Maldives-India relationship, which had experienced tensions earlier in his administration.
These tensions were exacerbated by the President’s promise to withdraw Indian troops from the Maldives, a move that stirred controversy.
However, President Dr. Muizzu reiterated that his administration remains dedicated to a "Maldives First" policy.
For me, Maldives will always come first. But respect for our neighbors and friends is embedded in our DNA. Indians have always been welcome in the Maldives, and they continue to make positive contributions to our society
He explained
He further added that the Maldives looks forward to enhancing "people-to-people" connections with India, underscoring the importance of cultural and social ties between the two nations.
Indian tourists are welcome in the Maldives, and we look forward to strengthening this important aspect of our partnership
President Dr. Muizzu stated
The President acknowledged India’s role as the world’s largest democracy and expressed confidence that both nations are aligned in addressing shared priorities.
President first met with Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar upon arrival in India and with Maldivian community in New Delhi.
Today, he is scheduled to hold official bilateral talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and sign key agreements aimed at further strengthening ties between the two countries.
This visit marks President Dr. Muizzu’s first official trip to India since assuming office in November last year.
However, he had previously visited the country in June to attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony for his third term, where the two leaders discussed enhancing bilateral cooperation.
