Former President Nasheed and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Former President Mohamed Nasheed expressed his happiness over the strengthening ties between India and the Maldives during President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's official state visit to India, following an invitation from Indian President Droupadi Murmu.

Nasheed, who has consistently fostered close relations with India, shared his thoughts on X, emphasizing the cultural and historical connections between the two nations.

India and Maldives are natural partners with so much in common: music, films, food, culture, history, and geography. We should always remain friends. So happy to see things fall into place and the relationship fixed. Congratulations to PM Modi and Pres. Dr. Muizzu

He wrote

He expressed satisfaction with the ongoing improvements and stabilization of relations between those countries, congratulating both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Dr Muizzu for their roles in fostering better ties.

The backdrop of these remarks includes a period of strained relations between India and the Maldives, exacerbated by controversial comments made by deputy ministers in the Maldivian youth ministry that affected bilateral relations.

Despite these challenges, recent diplomatic efforts have reinforced the bond between India and the Maldives.

As part of these efforts, travel agency EaseMyTrip resumed bookings to the Maldives last week after previously halting them.

This move reflects a broader trend of improving tourism relations, with India previously being a significant source market for Maldivian tourism.

During his state visit, President first met with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.

Official talks with Prime Minister Modi are scheduled for tomorrow.

This marks President Dr. Muizzu's first official visit to India since taking office on November 17 of last year, although he traveled to India in June to attend Modi's swearing-in ceremony for a third term, where discussions on strengthening bilateral relations took place.
