President Dr Muizzu raises fish export tariff issue in meeting with EU Commission President
President Dr. Muizzu addressed the critical issue of fish export tariffs during his meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The meeting, which took place in New York, focused on enhancing the diplomatic relations between the Maldives and the European Union.
During the discussion, President Dr. Muizzu highlighted the significant challenges posed by the 24% tariff on Maldivian fish exports to the EU, which he stated severely hinders the competitiveness of Maldivian fisheries in the European market.
He urged the European Commission to reconsider this tariff, emphasizing its detrimental impact on the livelihood of local fishermen and the overall economy of the Maldives.
In addition to the tariff issue, President Dr. Muizzu presented his administration's development agenda, outlining key areas where the Maldives seeks further assistance from the EU.
He also underscored the country's ongoing efforts in climate adaptation and mitigation, seeking support to bolster these initiatives.
President von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to supporting the Maldives, acknowledging the country's proactive stance on climate change.
She expressed appreciation for the Maldives’ initiatives and reiterated the EU's readiness to provide assistance in adaptation and mitigation efforts.
Both leaders concluded their meeting by emphasizing their mutual commitment to strengthening diplomatic ties and collaborating on shared challenges.
