The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has confirmed that it has been actively investigating corruption allegations involving MP Ibrahim Shujau, the senior deputy leader of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC)’s parliamentary group, since late 2023.

The announcement comes in the wake of a leaked Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) report that flagged MVR 42.5 million in suspicious financial transactions linked to Shujau.

The report, which was published by an anonymous account on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, triggered widespread public concern and political reaction.

According to the leaked document, the flagged transactions occurred between November 1, 2023 and January 10, 2024.

Among them is an MVR 23 million state contract awarded to Sifainge Welfare Corporation (SIWEC) for organizing the 2023 presidential inauguration, which was reportedly subcontracted to three companies allegedly linked to Shujau including his own firm, Official Events.

Speaking to Voice on Monday, an ACC spokesperson stated that the commission had independently launched its probe into the case last year and that the investigation remains ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Maldives Police Service also confirmed on Sunday that it is conducting a separate inquiry into the suspicious transactions flagged in the FIU analysis.

Following the leak, Parliament on Monday reassigned MP Shujau from the powerful Public Accounts Committee to the National Development and Heritage Committee.

Despite the controversy, Shujau has denied receiving any official communication regarding the matter.
