MP Shujau transferred from public accounts to heritage committee amid accusations
The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has removed MP Ibrahim Shujau from the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee, following the leak of a Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) report that flagged MVR 42.5 million in suspicious financial transactions linked to the lawmaker.
The FIU report, which surfaced on social media over the weekend, has stirred significant public concern.
It identifies transactions allegedly connected to Shujau, who represents Baarah constituency and holds the second-highest position within the PNC.
On Sunday, the Maldives Police confirmed that an investigation into the transactions involving Shujau had been ongoing since April this year.
In light of mounting public criticism, Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla on Monday announced changes to the composition of parliamentary committees.
As part of the reshuffle initiated by the PNC, MP Shujau has been reassigned from the influential Public Accounts Committee to the National Development and Heritage Committee, replacing South Feydhoo MP Ibrahim Didi.
Meanwhile, Guraidhoo MP Hanan Mohamed Rasheed has been appointed to fill Shujau’s vacated seat on the Public Accounts Committee.
