President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has put forward three key proposals for multilateral cooperation among United Nations (UN) member states during his address at the Summit of the Future, part of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
Speaking on Sunday, President Muizzu emphasized the need for the UN to deliver tangible results, rather than allowing resolutions to remain unimplemented.
The President’s proposals focused on youth empowerment, climate action, and financing sustainable development. He began by calling for investment in digital infrastructure to empower young people globally.
We are investing in cutting-edge digital infrastructure to ensure every young person has access to the latest technologies,
President Dr Muizzu said

The second proposal addressed the urgent need to combat climate change, a threat that the President warned would affect future generations.

President Dr Muizzu also highlighted the financial toll of extreme weather events on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), revealing that these incidents have caused over USD 153 billion in losses over the past 50 years.
He urged the summit to honor commitments made regarding climate adaptation, mitigation, and the protection of ocean and marine resources.
The Maldives, he said, remains committed to achieving a net-zero, climate-resilient future, and he called on other nations to do their part.
The final proposal focused on the critical role of financing in meeting global development goals.
President Dr Muizzu highlighted the significant financing gap, estimating the shortfall for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) financing and investment at between USD 2.5 to USD 4 trillion annually.

courage to halt the genocidal war in Gaza. Courage to grant the State of Palestine full membership of the United Nations. Courage to hold perpetrators of human rights accountable.
President Dr Muizzu said
He added that the UN must be closer to the people and more responsive to their needs.
President Dr Muizzu urged UN member states to fully implement the outcome documents of the summit, envisioning a future defined by equity, innovation, and real impact.
President Dr Muizzu concluded with a powerful reminder that future generations will judge global leaders not by the plans they propose, but by the actions they take.
