UK to enforce Electronic Travel Authorisation for travelers
The UK government has introduced changes to its immigration policies, requiring travelers to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for entry into the country.
The main objective of the changes is to digitize and further strengthen the country’s border control security, prevent abuse of the immigration system and introduce additional security measures before entering the UK, the source stated.
Starting 27 November 2024, citizens from 49 countries, including the Maldives, can apply for an ETA.
By 8 January 2025, obtaining an ETA will become mandatory for travel to the UK.
The ETA, which costs £10, will be valid for two years, allowing multiple visits of up to six months per trip or until the passport expires.
From 2 April 2025, all foreign nationals, except UK and Irish citizens, will be required to secure an ETA prior to traveling to the UK.
Citizens planning to travel to the UK have been encouraged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to be mindful of these new changes and ensure compliance with the updated UK immigration regulations.
