Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih stated that the government should avoid actions that could undermine trust in the Bank of Maldives (BML).

In a post on X, he emphasized that BML plays a vital role in the lives of many individuals and businesses, adding that maintaining public confidence in the bank is essential at all times.

Even if it is the government, anything that undermines the trust in BML should not be done. If trust in BML is lost, it will be a great loss for the entire society. It is the people's bank.

On August 25, BML announced that foreign transactions for debit and credit cards linked to MVR accounts would be suspended, causing widespread concern.

However, the decision was quickly reversed following instructions from the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA).

On the night of August 26, police opened an investigation into the bank's decision, after the opposition allegedly called for the government's overthrow.

President Dr. Muizzu later suggested that the BML issue was an attempt to stage a financial coup, expressing suspicion that individuals were orchestrating the changes behind the scenes.

Additionally, some government ministers accused the MDP of being involved in the matter covertly.
