Abbas Shareef cleared for Prosecutor General post by Judiciary Committee
The Judiciary Committee of Parliament has unanimously approved the appointment of Abbas Shareef as the next Prosecutor General.
The decision was made following a meeting held on Monday, where the committee also conducted an interview with Abbas.
During the interview, Abbas emphasized his independence, stating that his candidacy was not influenced by any political figure and that he will not succumb to external pressure.
He remarked that his bid for the position remained confidential until the media reported it, following the submission of his criminal record clearance.
Abbas Shareef’s appointment follows the dismissal of former Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.
In addition to Abbas, five other candidates applied for the post, including former Criminal Court Chief Justice Ahmed Hailam, former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath, and current Deputy Prosecutor General Ali Sameer.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted Abbas’ nomination to parliament.
Abbas holds a law degree from the University of Tasmania and previously served as a High Court judge between 2011 and 2015.
He has also acted as legal counsel for two former Maldivian presidents.
