Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has accused the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) of plunging the country into a deep financial crisis.

Responding to a social media post by former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, Saeed criticized the MDP government’s economic management, describing it as disastrous.

In his post on X (formerly Twitter), Saeed stated,

The MDP’s five-year rule, particularly under Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail, has taken the country 100 years into debt. It is shameful for him to speak about the economy now. The entire state system was turned upside down, and the country’s finances were thrown into an unknown pit.

Saeed further emphasized that the national interest should come before any individual, in reference to Fayyaz’s comments on the recent dismissal of Aishath Noordeen, the Deputy CEO of Bank of Maldives (BML).

Noordeen, who served at BML for over 42 years, was removed from the board, a move that has sparked public debate.

In response, Fayyaz Ismail criticized Saeed and the current government’s handling of the economy, urging them to focus on solutions instead of blaming the previous administration.

Dear Minister Saeed, I wish you luck in steering the economy to calmer waters. Unfortunately, I don’t see the capacity or vision from you or the government to do so,

Fayyaz wrote

He went on to say that the people expect the current administration to deliver on their promises rather than continue to blame the former government, urging them to focus on policies that support small and medium businesses.

The exchange comes amidst ongoing discussions about the economic challenges facing the Maldives and the direction the government should take to stabilize the situation.
