President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has officially re-established the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) under Section 8(a) of the recently enacted Food Safety Act (Act No. 6/2024).

This move, announced through Presidential Directive 17/2024, places the MFDA under the Ministry of Health's jurisdiction.

With this restructuring, the previously existing Maldives Food and Drug Authority has been dissolved as of today, as per the directive.

The new MFDA has been granted unprecedented authority to enforce food safety regulations throughout the country.

The newly re-established MFDA has been empowered to impose fines, revoke licenses, and release information about entities and individuals found to be in violation of the standards set forth under the Food Safety Act.

These enhanced powers aim to strengthen the regulatory framework surrounding food safety in the Maldives.

The Food Safety Act, which comes into effect today, sets stringent standards for establishments involved in food production, processing, packaging, labeling, storage, transportation, and distribution.

The law also details the licensing procedures for these operations and establishes safety and hygiene standards for all food service personnel, from preparers to packers and transporters.

In addition to overseeing domestic food production, the MFDA will ensure the quality and safety of food products imported into and exported from the Maldives, safeguarding public health across the country.

This move signifies a significant step forward in the Maldives' commitment to upholding food safety and quality, aligning with international standards to protect consumers.
