PG Shameem steps down from his position
Hussain Shameem has resigned as Prosecutor General following the initiation of parliamentary proceedings aimed at removing him from office.
Earlier today, the Judiciary Committee voted to dismiss Shameem, citing his misuse of authority to withdraw several cases and his failure to pursue key charges.
Parliament is holding a session tonight to discuss his impeachment, with members focusing on various issues related to his conduct.
According to the meeting’s Speaker of Parliament, Ahmed Nazim, the President’s Office was expected to notify the People’s Majlis about receiving Shameem’s resignation letter.
However, since no such notification has been given, the session will continue.
The grounds for Shameem’s dismissal include filing charges in high-profile cases such as the Ali Waheed sexual assault case, dismissal of former MP Ali Riza’s human trafficking case, and reopening Ahmed Mahloof’s MPRC case.
At a press conference earlier today, Shameem announced his intention to resign, noting that he is following in the footsteps of former Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizzu.
Former PG Muizzu stepped down ahead of a no-confidence vote and faced criticism for posting alcohol-related content on social media and discriminatory behavior towards employees.
With the position now vacant, Deputy Prosecutor General Mahmood Saleem has assumed the responsibilities of the office as per Article 7 of the Prosecutor General's Act.
