Maldives to establish National Research Council and research grants
In a significant move to boost research and innovation in the Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced the establishment of a National Research Council and the introduction of research grants at the Theveli International Conference 2024 held today.
This initiative is part of the government's broader commitment to a knowledge-based society and aligns with its reform agenda, which prioritizes areas such as environmental sustainability, economic development, and social welfare.
Speaking at the conference organized by the Maldives National University (MNU), President Muizzu emphasized that research is the "driving force behind human progress" and essential for addressing the increasingly complex challenges facing the world today.
He highlighted that the National Research Council will serve as a cornerstone for a research-driven future in the Maldives.
To this end, we are establishing a National Research Council as a cornerstone of research-driven future. This initiative, along with the introduction of research grants aligned with our reform agenda, particularly in areas such as environmental sustainability, economic development, and social welfare, is a testament to our commitment to a knowledge-based society.
President Dr Muizzu stated
He further stressed the importance of ensuring that research informs policy decisions, stating that the government is committed to fostering a culture of research-based decision-making in the country.
The President also announced the introduction of research grants to support scholars and researchers working on projects aligned with national development priorities.

The Theveli 2024 Conference, hosted by the Maldives National University from August 19-20, centers on the theme "Bridging Boundaries: Exploring Synergies Across Research Disciplines." Named after the Dhivehi word "Theveli," which symbolizes the dispersion of rays on the sea at sunrise or sunset, the conference aims to spread knowledge far and wide.
Scholars and students from around the world will gather to share insights, contributing to both national and global intellectual progress.
