India-Maldives relations remain strong despite hurdles: Jaishankar
India's relationship with the Maldives remains smooth and resilient despite various challenges, said External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his visit to the Maldives on Friday .
Speaking at a ceremony held at the Maldivian Foreign Ministry, Jaishankar, who was visiting the Maldives for the first time since President Dr Muizzu took office, emphasized the importance of neighboring countries to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It’s worth noting that historic ties between India and the Maldives have faced recent strain, particularly with the rise of the 'India Out' campaign, both nations are now committed to rebuilding and strengthening their relationship.
The campaign, which gained traction before the current Maldivian administration came to power, had led to a cooling of relations over concerns regarding Maldives' ties with China and allegations of anti-India sentiments expressed by three Maldivian deputy ministers.
Despite these tensions, Jaishankar highlighted the mutual benefits that have stemmed from the bilateral relationship.
Our partnership has been fruitful, bringing significant benefits to the public
He said
following the official inauguration of several India-supported projects in the Maldives.
The projects, which aim to enhance education and healthcare, include the establishment of an Inclusive Education Support Unit across three schools and a Child Development Centre at Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuhfushi Hospital.
Additionally, a new Mental Health Unit was inaugurated at Raa Atoll Ungoofaaru Regional Hospital, alongside the installation of streetlights in various islands.
Further solidifying the partnership, Jaishankar witnessed the signing of two key agreements between the two countries.
The first, an MoU between India's National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Maldivian Economic Ministry, will introduce India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services to the Maldives.
The second agreement, between the Maldives Civil Service Commission and India's National Centre for Good Governance, aims to train an additional 1,000 Maldivian civil service employees.
Jaishankar underscored the significance of these initiatives,
These are projects that will benefit the common man every day
He stated
He also expressed his intent to engage with various Maldivian ministries, including Economic Development, Finance, and Defense, to continue advancing similar collaborative efforts.
