The High Commission of Maldives in the UK has issued a critical advisory for Maldivian citizens traveling to or residing in the UK due to ongoing civil unrest that has been escalating since July.

This advisory comes in response to significant disturbances that began in Southport after a tragic stabbing incident.

On July 29, three young girls were killed in a stabbing attack in Southport, leading to widespread public outrage.

Online misinformation suggesting that the suspect, who is not a Muslim or a migrant, was involved fueled further anger and contributed to the unrest.

The actual suspect, Alex Rudakubana, is a Welsh-born teenager, contrary to the rumors circulating online.

In light of the unrest, which has seen close to 6,000 police officers deployed, the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is urging all Maldivian nationals to exercise heightened caution.

The Ministry is advising individuals to avoid areas where protests are planned and to adhere to safety instructions issued by both the British Government and the Maldivian High Commission.

Maldivians who require assistance or are seeking more information about the current situation are encouraged to contact the High Commission of Maldives in the UK.

For those living in the UK, registering with the High Commission is recommended.
