Maamigili Province Member Qasim Ibrahim emphasized the importance of ensuring that the Constitution cannot be easily amended.

Speaking in the Parliament meeting today, Qasim noted the 16th anniversary of the Maldivian Constitution's adoption, a milestone that established fundamental rights, separation of powers, and democratic principles.

Qasim pointed out that while the Constitution was difficult to change in the past, recent amendments have been made with relative ease.

“But, back when the Constitution was completed, it was not so easy to change it. The Constitution cannot be played with so that a law can be changed.” Qasim stated.

He expressed concern that allowing the Constitution to be amended with a 75 percent parliamentary vote could lead to negative consequences, highlighting that some earlier amendments have already been revised.

“This Parliament now has all the power to amend the Constitution, instead of that, some mechanism should be looked at that cannot be done so easily.” Qasim explained.

He stressed the importance of safeguarding the Constitution from easy amendments, warning that a majority could potentially alter fundamental civil rights or other key principles.

He also mentioned the availability of possibly changing provisions such as those that stipulate that the religion of the country is Islam.
