Maldives issues safety advisory for nationals in Bangladesh amid escalating protests
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives has advised Maldivians traveling to or residing in Bangladesh to exercise caution during the ongoing protests in the country.
The protests in Bangladesh have erupted over the reservation of 30% government jobs for families of veterans and freedom fighters during the war of independence against Pakistan in 1971.
The unrest has resulted in more than 200 deaths according to recent reports.
Previously, the Foreign Ministry had warned Maldivians in Bangladesh to remain vigilant.
Due to the situation, curfews have been imposed at various times.
The Ministry advises Maldivians to adhere to the curfews and follow the instructions from both the Bangladesh government and the Maldives High Commission in Bangladesh.
According to MInistry, Maldives High Commission in Bangladesh is closely monitoring the situation of Maldivians currently in the country.
Regular contact is being maintained with 83 students in Chittagong, seven in Dhaka, and one in Cumilla.
Additionally, information indicates that there are 119 Maldivians in Bangladesh, all of whom are reported to be safe.
