The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives has issued a cautionary advisory for Maldivian travelers and residents in the UK due to ongoing civil unrest.

This follows a tragic incident in Southport, northwest England, where a deadly knife attack during a children's dance class claimed the lives of three young girls.

The Ministry's statement highlights that the Maldives High Commission in the UK is closely monitoring the situation, particularly noting a surge in anti-Muslim protests.

These protests have been fueled by false claims that the suspect in the stabbings, which resulted in the deaths of three girls aged six, seven, and nine, is a Muslim immigrant.

Consequently, far-right groups have been targeting local shops and a mosque in Southport.

Maldivians residing in the UK and those planning to travel there are urged to exercise increased caution, especially in Southport and its surrounding areas.

The Ministry emphasizes the importance of staying informed about ongoing events and prioritizing personal safety.

The Ministry's request is for each and every person to be especially cautious and stay updated on events while prioritizing one's own safety

the statement reads.

Additionally, individuals are advised to avoid areas experiencing unrest and adhere to instructions from local authorities.

For any consular assistance, Maldivians can contact the Maldivian High Commission in the UK at (44) 02072242135 or via email at [email protected]
