Maldives has embarked on an unprecedented journey to measure the Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index, marking the first time the country has undertaken such an initiative.

This extensive survey aims to analyze the happiness, well-being, life satisfaction, and sustainability resilience of the Maldivian populace.

Minister of Cities, Local Government, and Public Works, Adam Shareef Umar, announced that this nationwide survey is being conducted in collaboration with the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM).
During a workshop held on Tuesday at the university, various ideas and visions necessary to advance the initiative were deliberated.

Minister Umar, who graced the workshop, emphasized the importance of understanding that satisfaction and happiness cannot be purchased.

Many people believe that money is everything in life, but this is a misconception. While some people prioritize concrete development, others value a simple life

he remarked

He also highlighted the diverse challenges faced by different islands and the need to consider how other countries approach the measurement of happiness. The workshop was also attended by the Vice-Chancellor of IUM, Dr. Ali Zahir.

The GNH Index classifies individuals into four categories: unhappy, narrowly happy, extensively happy, and deeply happy.
It examines the current state of happiness among the population and focuses on developing policies to enhance happiness and sufficiency for those who are unhappy or narrowly happy.
This analysis is based on nine domains: -

- Living standards

- Education Health

- Environment

- Community

- Vitality

- Time-use

- Psychological well-being

- Good Governance

- Cultural resilience and promotion

Annually, the GNH Index analyzes and ranks countries worldwide based on their happiness levels, providing a comprehensive overview of global well-being.
This initiative is expected to be a significant step towards understanding and improving the overall happiness of the Maldivian people.
