VP Latheef departs for Paris to attend 2024 Olympics opening ceremony

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has departed for Paris, France, on Wednesday morning to attend the opening ceremony of the "Paris 2024 Olympics," following an invitation from the French Government and the International Olympic Committee.

The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, July 26, 2024.

During his visit, Vice President Latheef will meet with the Maldivian athletes participating in the Games and attend their respective competitions.

This year, the Maldives will have its largest representation at the Olympics, with five athletes competing in various sports.

Fathimath Dheema Ali, table tennis player, and Ibadulla Adam, sprinter, have been selected to bear the national flag during the opening ceremony.

The other athletes representing the Maldives are:

Fathimath Nabaha in badminton

Aishath Ulya Shaaiq in swimming

Mohamed Aan Hussain in swimming

The Paris 2024 Olympics, which will run from July 26 to August 11, 2024, marks a significant milestone for the Maldives, offering a global platform to showcase the country's athletic talent.

Last Sunday, President Dr Muizzu also met with the athletes to commend their efforts and affirm the Government's unprecedented commitment to advancing sports in the Maldives.
