Maldivians safe, two students cross border amid Bangladesh unrest: Foreign Ministry

The High Commission of Maldives in Bangladesh has confirmed that they are closely monitoring the situation of Maldivians living in and traveling to the country.

According to a statement released today by Foreign ministrey, 90 students currently registered with the High Commission, along with their families and other Maldivians residing in Bangladesh for various reasons, are being contacted to ensure their well-being and to provide necessary assistance.

The High Commission has reported that the condition of Maldivians in Bangladesh is generally good.

Two medical students studying in northern Bangladesh have informed the ministry of their intention to return to the Maldives after their schools closed.

The High Commission of Maldives in Bangladesh and the High Commission of Maldives in India assisted these students in crossing the Bangladesh border by bus.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs urges Maldivians to follow the directives of the Bangladeshi government and the instructions provided by the High Commission of Maldives in Bangladesh.

The Ministry also advises against unnecessary travel outside.

The unrest in Bangladesh began with protests against the civil service hiring process, leading to the implementation of a curfew.

Protests have intensified, with clashes occurring between protesters, police, and pro-government activists.

International media reports indicate that buildings have been torched, telecommunications disrupted, and dozens killed.

In response, the Bangladeshi government has shut down high schools, Islamic educational institutions, and vocational education institutions until further notice.
