A bill proposing an amendment to the Legal Profession Act to exclude the Attorney General from the Bar Council's Executive Committee was submitted to the parliament today.

The bill was introduced by North Hulhumale’ MP Hussain Shareef of the ruling Progressive National Congress (PNC) on behalf of the government.

The primary goal of the bill is to ensure the complete independence of the Bar Council in its operations, allowing representatives chosen by legal professionals to manage matters related to the legal profession.

Under the proposed amendment, the Bar Council's Executive Committee will be comprised solely of a president, a vice president, and members elected by legal professionals, removing the Attorney General from the committee.

Additionally, the bill includes amendments concerning the attestation of documents issued by government offices and registered educational institutions.

It also addresses the attestation of documents issued to Maldivians by diplomatic missions for use in the respective countries.
