The Government of Japan has donated vehicles worth over USD 4 million to the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

During a ceremony at Iskandar Koshi on Sunday morning, 54 cars and four vans, valued at USD 4 million (MVR 61 million), were handed over to MPS.

Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau, speaking at the event, highlighted the rising number of criminal offenders in the Maldives and stressed the importance of enhancing the capacity of police officers to maintain nationwide stability and security.

He noted that the vehicle donation would significantly support these efforts and contribute to positive outcomes.

Shujau expressed gratitude to the Japanese Government, viewing the donation as a testament to the strong relationship between the Maldives and Japan.

Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori, also spoke at the ceremony, stating that the donation is intended to provide adequate resources for MPS operations and reflects Japan’s ongoing support for Maldivian law enforcement.

She announced plans for future donations, including metal detectors, lasers, passenger crafts, and rubber boats.
