The President's Criminal Justice Advisor and former Prosecutor General, Muhtaz Muhsin, has called for former President Abdullah Yameen to be charged for the arrest of the Chief Justice and a Supreme Court judge.

In February 2018, the Supreme Court issued an order to release numerous political prisoners during Yameen's administration.

However, the government delayed the implementation of this order, declared a state of emergency, and sent police and military forces into the Supreme Court to forcibly arrest Chief Justice Abdullah Saeed and Supreme Court Judge Ali Hameed, who were subsequently detained in Dhoonidhoo.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was also arrested that night.

Photos of the military removing the roof of the Supreme Court to arrest the judges sparked widespread criticism.

After losing power, Yameen admitted during a rally that he had sent troops to the Supreme Court when the state was being obstructed, encouraging the security forces to act.

Speaking on Aslu TV, Muhtaz highlighted that Yameen had publicly acknowledged his involvement in the incident.

He argued that judges should not be treated in such a manner and insisted that Yameen should face prosecution, similar to the prosecution of former President Mohammed Nasheed.

If former President Nasheed is charged, former President Yameen should also be charged. He has publicly admitted it and said he did the same.

Muhtaz Stated

Nasheed was investigated and charged with terrorism for the arrest of then-Criminal Court Judge Abdullah Mohammed while Muhtaz was the Prosecutor General.

In the case of the Supreme Court, those who ordered the police and army to enter the court should be investigated and prosecuted

Muhtaz emphasized

He also indicated his intent to pursue action against those responsible for the arrests of Chief Justice Saeed and Judge Ali Hameed, stating that he is a man of action and committed to ensuring judicial independence and public confidence.

Muhtaz, who filed charges against many opposition leaders during Yameen's government, including Nasheed, former Defense Minister Mohammed Nazim, and former Home Minister Sheikh Imran Abdullah, was later removed from office by the then-government-majority parliament.

Shortly after, he was arrested for attempting to issue an invalid court order to arrest Yameen and sentenced to 17 years in prison.

He was eventually released after the High Court quashed his sentence following Yameen's presidency trial.
